Spartan Race

Obstacle Course Racing is currently the fastest growing sport in the Nation and is designed for people of all ages, races, weight, and athletic ability to be able to participate in.

Some of the biggest names in OCR right now are Spartan Race, Tough Mudder, Warrior Dash, and Rugged Maniac. The biggest, boldest, and baddest (in our RAPT opinion) is Spartan Race. Spartan Race was founded in 2007 by Joe DeSena and a few others. Since then it has grown to be one of the most popular Obstacle Course Races in the world, and was named, “Best Obstacle Race” by Outside Magazine in 2012. In 2013 Spartan partnered with Reebok to become the now known “Reebok Spartan Race”. Now you can watch Spartan Races on national television on NBC Sports to follow some of the professional athletes as well as “average Joes”.

Spartan caters to people of all shapes and sizes. Joe DeSena himself states, “Spartan Race was designed to rip people off the couch!” Just like people, Spartan Races come in all shapes and sizes. They feature a 1.5 mile Kids race, a 3+ mile Spartan “Sprint” with 12+ obstacles, an 8+ mile Spartan “Super” with 20+ obstacles, a 13+ mile Spartan “Beast” with 30+ obstacles, and for the truly insane, the 24+ mile Spartan “Ultra Beast” with 50+ obstacles (usually two laps of a Beast course). Obstacles include rope climbs, barbed wire crawls, spear throws, fire jumps, sandbag carries, and many more; not to mention the terrain itself. What sets Spartan apart from the rest of the field is if you fail an obstacle you must do 30 burpees to move on! This pushes racer out of their comfort zone and to their limits, which is what Spartan is all about.

Here at RAPT, founder Josh Costa and his wife Kelly have currently completed 12 Spartan Races, including Elite races, in the past three years and are not slowing down. Co-Owner Tammi Gorman and her husband Steve have completed 4 in the past two years. All four people recently completed the coveted “Spartan Trifecta” which is the completion of a Sprint, Super, and Beast within a calendar year. During the summer of 2015 RAPT put together a team of 19 people, some who had never raced before and a few who had, to complete their first Spartan Sprint. The 19 team members consisted of men and women from age 16-65, the race was completed as a team ensuring that everyone made it through all obstacles and crossed the finish line together. Josh Costa designed a summer program specifically to prepare everyone for race day. Interest has grown and RAPT is now hoping to have a presence at multiple races for the 2016 race season. The RAPT Spartan team not only was a huge success in helping people conquer their fears and face their limits but gives a vision as to why we continue to train day in and day out. We become motived to better ourselves, conquer more obstacles, and do fewer burpees!
